Department of Food and Drug Services

The Department of Food and Drug Services was established in 1993 following the excision of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from the then Food and Drug Administration and Control (FDAC) department.

VISION
A department that is resolutely committed to, and focal in, promoting access to safe and wholesome food and medicines and other health products for effective health care delivery in Nigeria

MISSION
To promote the health of all Nigerians through the formulation of national policies, development of guidelines and strategies and initiation of legislation aimed at ensuring that food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices and packaged water available in Nigeria are safe and efficacious and by ensuring provision of ethical pharmaceutical services in the public and private sectors of our health care delivery system nationwide.

MANDATE:
i.    To promote the health of all Nigerians through the formulation of national policies, development of guidelines and strategies and initiation of legislation aimed at ensuring that food, medicines & other health commodities, chemicals, cosmetics, medical devices and drinking water available in Nigeria are safe and efficacious and by ensuring provision of ethical pharmaceutical services in the public and private sectors of our health care delivery system nationwide.
ii.    Liaison between the Federal Ministry of Health, its Agencies/Parastatals and other bodies on issues affecting food, drugs, chemicals, cosmetics, medical devices and other health commodities.
iii.    Training of Intern Pharmacists and other Scientists

DIRECTOR OF FOOD & DRUG SERVICES

Pharm. Mashood Oluku Lawal (B. Pharm, M. Pharm-Clinical)

Pharm. Mashood, Oluku Lawal is a Clinical Pharmacist and a Civil Servant with vast experience in Pharmacy and administration; spanning over three (3) decades in Nigeria’s Public Health sector. He graduated with a B. Pharm. from the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka and also bagged a Master of Pharmacy degree in Clinical Pharmacy from University of Lagos.

He has served in different capacities ranging from Regulatory, Manufacturing, Policy development and formulation, hospital pharmacy, policy monitoring and evaluation, management and administration.

He held various managerial  positions including, Head of the Traditional and Alternative Medicines division,  Head of extraction unit at the Nigerian Medicinal Plants Development Company (NMPDC), Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development to mention but a few.

In the course of his rewarding practice and career, an extensive professional administrative and managerial experience has been garnered. He has carried out research work, attended and facilitated several seminars, workshops and conferences at both local and international levels.

Having served and currently serving in various committees and boards of some Federal institutions, Pharm. Lawal has demonstrated a deep sense of commitment, honesty, and patriotism that have earned him the trust and endeared him to his superiors, supervisors and colleagues as well as subordinates. These attributes earned him the recognition of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) with the award of 1st Pfizer Award of Excellence in Hospital and Administrative Pharmacy 2015.

As a Professional, he is a member of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). With great passion for his country, Pharm. Lawal is committed to the course of development of Nigeria.
